I-94 construction crash kills two

Construction worker Rafael Castillo-Saavedra died after he and a coworker were hit by a motorist in a closed lane on Interstate 94 in Detroit late in the evening of Sunday, October 11.

The motorist, Marvin Harris, was headed east in his 1999 red Chevrolet near West Grand Boulevard at 9:50 p.m. when he struck another parked vehicle and the two workers, who were working on sealing cracks on the concrete. The construction workers were occupying a lane that had been closed to traffic for their protection.

Harris and Castillo-Saavedra were both pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while the second construction worker was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition.

Geno Alessandrini, Business Manager of the Michigan Laborers’ District Council told the public that the accident is a reminder of the inherent dangers of construction sites. “On behalf of the 12,000 members of the Michigan Laborers, we extend our condolences to the family, friends, and co-workers of Rafael,” he said.

The accident is still under investigation by state troopers.


Prominent lawyer dies in a car crash

Attorney Corbett O’Meara, son of U.S. Judge John Corbett O’Meara, died following a car crash involving two cars at around 11:50 a.m. on Saturday, November 9 on Harper Avenue at Shady Lane.

St. Clair Shores police said in a statement that the 1999 Acura being driven by O’Meara struck a tree after hitting the rear of a silver Mercedes Benz. Both drivers were transported to a Detroit hospital.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Mercedes Benz, a 69-year-old Eastpointe woman whose name was not released, is in critical condition.

Hit and run crash leaves one woman dead

A car crash occurred at the corner of Alter Road and Mack Avenue on Thursday, October 31, leaving one woman dead.

Detroit police said a van crashed into the side of an SUV around 3 a.m. on the 31st, instantly killing a woman who was a passenger of the SUV. The police added that after the crash, the driver of the van left the scene by walking away, but was caught after about an hour.

An investigation is still underway to determine if the suspect was intoxicated.
