NHTSA plans to expand Hyundai airbag recall
On Wednesday, December 4, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it will open an investigation to determine whether the Hyundai Elantra airbag recall should be expanded to include 2009 to 2012 Elantra Touring units. The inquiry was called after the agency found that the approximately 52,000 2009 to 2012 Elantra Touring units have a metal support lining similar to that of the 2011 to 2013 Elantra units previously recalled due to defective airbag design.
Last March, 186,254 2011 to 2013 Elantra sedans were recalled due to poorly designed metal brackets attached in the vehicle’s headliner. The NHTSA said those brackets may pose injuries to drivers and passengers when side curtain airbags are utilized during side collision car accidents.
