Michigan's road deaths fell. Pedestrian deaths reached their highest level in at least 13 years.

184 people were killed while walking on Michigan roads in 2025, even as total traffic deaths fell 3%. Pedestrian crashes also follow a clear calendar: October was the worst month in 12 of the last 13 years, and the clocks fall back on November 1.

About this 2026 report: Michigan State Police has not published 2026 year-end figures. This report uses the latest finalized data, through calendar year 2025, from Michigan State Police and Michigan Traffic Crash Facts. Data checked October 18, 2026.

Pedestrian deaths, 2013 to 2025

2025's total of 184 is the highest in the 13 years shown. It edged past the 183 deaths recorded in both 2021 and 2023, so the 18% jump from 2024 partly reflects how low 2024 was.

The fall danger window

Pedestrian crashes in Michigan cluster in the fall and in the evening commute. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, which moves that commute into darkness.

The light-condition figures cover all 2025 crashes, not only pedestrian crashes. Sunset times are estimated with NOAA solar equations for Detroit. These are timing patterns; they do not prove what caused any crash.

Methodology and limitations

Statewide 2024 vs. 2025. Counts come from the MSP 2024-2025 Year-End Comparison. We calculated the change and percent change for each measure, and two combined rows (pedestrian plus bicyclist deaths, and all other deaths).

13-year pedestrian trend. Pedestrian deaths, peak month, peak hour and age come from the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts annual Pedestrians fact sheets, 2013 to 2025. Total deaths come from the MSP Decade at a Glance.

County rates. From the MTCF 2025 County Ranking: people killed or seriously injured in pedestrian crashes, 2021 to 2025, divided by five and by each county's 2025 population. Detroit's pedestrian crashes come from the 2025 Wayne County profile, and its population from the 2025 Census estimate (649,095).

Light condition. From the MTCF 2025 statewide Crash report (all crash types).

Limitations

  • These are reported counts. They are not adjusted for how much people walk, drive or bike.
  • County rates use 2025 population for a five-year period and can shift for small counties.
  • "Involved" categories do not prove causation, and categories can overlap.
  • The calendar and darkness patterns describe when crashes happen, not why.
  • Final 2026 year-end data is not yet available in the cited sources. This report uses finalized data through calendar year 2025, and state figures may be revised.
