Everyday Injury Risk, Mapped
Hover any state for its full metric breakdown. Gray states did not publish a 2024 nonfatal-injury (DART) rate to BLS.
Key Findings
Full Ranking: All 50 States and D.C.
Click any column header to sort. Injury-risk score is a weighted composite of workplace fatality and nonfatal-injury rates (see methodology). 100 = highest risk, 0 = lowest.
| Rank | State | Risk Score | Workplace Deaths / 100k | 2024 Workplace Deaths | Nonfatal Injury Rate* | Dog Bite Claims (2024) |
|---|
*Nonfatal injury rate = cases involving days away from work, restriction, or transfer, per 100 full-time private-industry workers (BLS SOII, 2024). "n/a" indicates the state did not publish this rate.
Spotlight: Dog Bite & Dog-Related Injury Claims, 2024
| Rank | State | Claims | Avg. Cost/Claim | Total Paid |
|---|
Source: Insurance Information Institute & State Farm, "Top 10 States By Estimated Number And Cost Of Dog Bite Claims, 2024." U.S. total: 22,658 claims, $69,272 average cost, $1,569.6 million paid. Only the top 10 states are published by III; other states are not ranked in this table.
Methodology
Sources: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (fatal work injuries by state, 2024) and Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (nonfatal DART rate by state, private industry, 2024); Insurance Information Institute and State Farm, dog bite and dog-related injury liability claims by state, 2024.
Injury-Risk Index construction: each state was percentile-ranked on workplace fatality rate per 100,000 residents (60% weight) and nonfatal DART injury rate per 100 full-time workers (40% weight) to produce a single 0–100 composite score. States that did not publish a 2024 DART rate (Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Rhode Island, South Dakota) are scored on the fatality-rate metric alone, consistent with BLS's own state-participation disclosures.
Dog bite claims are shown as a standalone spotlight table rather than folded into the composite score, because the Insurance Information Institute publishes only the top 10 states by claim volume, not a full 50-state breakdown.
Caveat: workplace fatality counts include all industries and do not isolate any single cause; rankings reflect relative risk across the weighted metrics, not a prediction of any individual's likelihood of injury.
